Spring Break and a Sleep update

My mom is on spring break this week, so she asked if she could have Nick for a day. So today, instead of going to daycare, Nick is spending the day with his Gramma, and his Great-Gramma (mom is taking him to my grandparents place for lunch and lots of lovin'). In turn for allowing her to take my baby all day, mom brought me Starbucks this morning. Pretty nice trade off! ;) Just kidding -- I wouldn't trade that baby for anything in the world.

However, this does raise my eyebrows just a bit...if mom had to have him for a day on her spring break, how often is she going to want to take him when she's off for the summer...and then, officially retired? Should I just cancel our babysitter now? I'm sure mom would say "no no, don't cancel the babysitter, I'm not going to be his daycare in the summer"...but I have a sneaking suspicion that he'll be spending his fair share of time at Gramma's come the end of June. :) But hey, if she's willing to come pick him up, and we both get to sleep in a little bit longer, then fine by me!

Speaking of sleeping...Sunday night was awesome. Nick went down and was completely out by 9:00pm, so I hopped in bed and went to sleep at the same time. He woke up crying to eat at about 3:30am, and I tried to let him cry it out for a bit, but could tell he was starving, so I got up and gave him a bottle. But at that point I had gotten over 6 straight hours of consecutive sleep, so I was jumping for joy. He ate a little more than half of the bottle, and went back to sleep from about 4:30am - 6:45am (as did I). We both woke up in stellar spirits. He was laughing and smiling and cooing all the way to daycare.

Monday night was a little less awesome. He didn't make it down until closer to 9:30pm, and only slept until about 2:30am. But this time, Todd got up with him and gave him a bottle. He was back in his crib and Todd back in bed by about 3:30am, but Nick continued to grunt and fuss most of the wee hours of the morning...and when you have a video baby monitor, it's really hard to ignore the movements and fussing (because I find myself watching the monitor like it's a late night video). We finally got up and crankily headed to daycare.

Last night was ok, but he reverted back to his "waking up in the exact middle of the night" ways. We were all in bed and pretty much passed out by 9:00pm, but Nick had eaten at 7:00pm (as opposed to his typical 8:00pm bottle), and naturally, as I predicted, was screaming out in hunger at 1:30am. So I got up, gave him a bottle, and he went right back down at 2:30am and stayed knocked out until a little after 5:30am. So while it wasn't exactly consecutive hours of sleep, it was enough to put me in to crazy REM mode and I had some seriously strange dreams.

So he was happy and smiley after his 6:00am bottle this morning, and I was hoping he would still be happy and smiley when my mom arrived to pick him up, but he was just starting to get fussy and I could tell he needed a mid-morning nap, so we plopped him in mom's car seat (yes, Gramma has her own!), and he passed out. Hopefully he'll wake up and be a happy baby over at his Great-Gramma's house today, because she has yet to see him do much more than sleep.

I just can't seem to nail down a schedule for him. The doctor said he's still too little to try to sleep train him, and at this point, if he's crying out in hunger, just feed him. But I find it really hard to get any routine down when he's always eating at different times of the night, and therefore making it tough for a schedule of eating at daycare as well. Not to mention this boy is going to eat us out of house and home. In a given feeding, he eats anywhere from 5 to 8 ounces. 8 OUNCES! He is a machine! Although I think he spits up about 2 of those ounces, but regardless, if he keeps moving at this rate, we're going to be in serious trouble come teenage years. I just hope he doesn't end up as one of those giant obese babies on an episode of Maury. "My 2 year old weighs 97 lbs!" Yikes!
