If you really are interested...
Things I actually ended up doing last night:
-Ate Chinese Food
-Watched The Bachelor
-Sat on the couch for a few minutes
-Took a bubble bath and had a big glass of wine! (success)
-Read the March issue of Cosmo (sort of success...I mean, I read something)
-Passed out in my bath robe, on top of the bed, around 9:30pm (sort of a reasonable hour)...I did use the "Sleepy Time" bubble bath from Bath & Body Works...so I blame them.
-Woke up when Todd called to say he was on his way home, and waited up for him (half-awake)
-Snuggled with hubs and puppy...and by snuggled, I mean Whinnie stood on top of Todd trying to stuff toys in his face, until she got bored and burrowed under the covers between us so she could incessantly lick my knees, preventing me from falling back asleep.
Not a total waste of an evening. Fortunately Todd doesn't have to work at the restaurant any more shifts this week...so, successful, accomplished evenings, here I come!

My brutal reality...
Things I'd like to do this evening:
-Enjoy a healthy, gourmet dinner.
-Have a big glass of wine, while taking a long, hot bubble bath.
-Read any of the 10 books I have started.
-Lay out my work clothes for tomorrow.
-Go to bed at a reasonable hour.
-Snuggle with hubs and puppy.
Things I will most likely do this evening:
-Eat Taco Bell
-Watch The Bachelor and other crappy TV
-Sit on the couch like a bump on a log
-Think about what I'll wear tomorrow -- not pick anything out
-Wait up until Todd gets home around midnight
-Pass out before Todd and Whinnie make it upstairs
Ahh, the life of glamour.

Happy Birthday...
...to the Love of my Life!! I hope, despite the fact that you have to work both jobs today, got 4 hours of sleep last night, ate a hot pocket for dinner at midnight, have been up since 5am, and won't get home until nearly midnight, that today is still fantastic and fabulous and wonderful and all things you deserve!
Thank you for being my best friend, constant source of entertainment, shoulder to cry on, most fun to flirt with, and every other synonym for perfect-for-me under the sun! I can't wait to see what the next 31 (plus!) years of life have in store for us, and there is nobody I would rather be sharing those years with than you!
I wish we could celebrate together more today, but we'll make the most of the weekend. And of course, I can't wait to give you your birthday presents tonight!
I love you times infinity! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Since the blizzard began...
...Whinnie has peed in the following places:
--The bedroom carpet
--The guest bath tub (also pooped)
--On the front porch, after it was shoveled (pooped here too)
--All over Keith's shirt...while he was wearing it (We're really sorry, Keith!!)
Can't wait to see where she'll go next...

Addendum
Addendum to the gift of sight post: Because my eye doctor appointment had already taken nearly 3 hours, when my glasses were ready I didn't take out my contacts to try on my new spectacles. BIG mistake. When I put them on last night, I had severe tunnel vision. Weirdest feeling ever. Similar to what I imagine it would feel like to have vertigo. And Whinnie's head looked even smaller than the regular peanut size that it is. I'm pretty sure the prescription is too strong.
Looks like (no pun intended) I'll be making a trip back to the doctor once this blizzard clears out. Until then, I'm just going to suck it up, and wear my glasses. And possibly some horse blinders in combination to minimize the tunnel vision...

My gift of sight.
I have not had a new pair of glasses since high school. I used the same pair of glasses all through college, and when I moved out on my own, they slowly started deteriorating. Aside from the fact that the prescription in them was so antiquated that I could barely see 2 feet in front of my face, they were also really big and round, and the ear and nose pieces were starting to fall off. When the left lens popped out and I had to use tape and a rubber band to keep it in place, I decided it was time to retire said glasses, for fear of my new boyfriend (eventual husband) dumping me because of my geekdom.
I have been wearing my contacts for the last several years from the minute I wake up in the morning, until 2 seconds before I go to sleep at night. I keep my contact case right next to my bed so that I can see every last second of the Real World or Good Eats before pulling out my contacts and passing out.
But lately I've been getting slight headaches in the evening. Of course it's possible I've fallen into the typical married woman behavior -- you know, faking headaches every night...ha ha ha. Just kidding. I know for a fact it's due to a combination of the fact that I wear my contacts for too many hours a day and that I stare at a computer screen for at least 8+ hours a day, 5 days a week.
I tried to cure the headaches with my recent infatuation for good red wine, but more than one or two glasses, and the headaches are even worse...they just take place the next morning (I think they call this a hangover, no?). **side note: I am currently consuming a delicious glass of Raven's Wood Zinfandel which my new-found wine-connoisseur husband suggested to me. But I'm allowed because a) it's Friday, b) it's after 5pm, and c) it's blizzard-ing outside.
Back to my eyes. So on Thursday I ventured to the eye doctor. Aside from the fact that I was there for nearly three hours, and my contact prescription remained the same, I was finally given the opportunity to get a new pair of glasses. JOY! I would now have an alternate optical choice!
So I headed back to the glasses department (in house at the eye doc's office), and started browsing frames. That's when I realized that I might be in trouble. Every single pair of glasses I looked at were in the $200 - $300 range. And I couldn't find anything cheaper! Nor did I know what my insurance would cover. So I nervously backed up from the shelves and clasped my hands behind my back, which drew the attention of one lady working the department who asked if I was Melissa, and then immediately (as if she could smell my fear) told me my insurance coverage plan, and pointed me to a far shelf in the back corner that contained the "$40 frames". (I found out after purchase that the frames were actually $180 but my awesome insurance paid for $140 of them!).
I told the girl that was helping me that it had been so long since I wore glasses, that I had no idea what they should look like. So she told me to try on several different pairs, see what I liked, and to avoid any pairs that were rimless because they would (and I quote) "show the thickness of your really strong prescription" (I'm pretty sure she breathed "Mr. Magoo" at the end of that sentence, but I can't be positive). YES - I'M BLIND! THANK YOU HENSON/KRAMER GENES! Can someone explain to me why my brother has perfect vision?!?! I digress.
So I began trying on several frames that I thought were very attractive and stylish, when the sweet girl that was helping me walked back over and said "hmm...it really has been a long time since you wore glasses, huh?" I said "yeah, it's that obvious?" and she said "well...all the styles you're trying on are very popular... with the older, 60+ woman crowd. How old are you?" When I said "27" she quickly picked up several frames that looked NOTHING like the ones I was trying and said "yeah...try some of these instead". So I finally settled on a more rectangular, thin brown framed pair that suited my face. She took them back to the lens maker and I went to check out while waiting for the glasses to be finished.
At the front desk, I pulled out my credit card to pay and the receptionist said "ok, $349.00". My jaw hit the floor. "I'm sorry...can I get a break down of costs, please?" I asked. Turns out, my glasses only ended up costing a third of that $349...and the exam, only $80. The rest of the cost? My stupid contact lenses.
As I drove home from the appointment, I called Todd. "Honey...I went to the eye doctor today..." I told him. He said "yes...and? cost...?" I very sheepishly replied "umm...$349.00". Todd's response? Well...Happy Birthday honey. This year, you're getting the gift of sight."
So now I'm wearing my glasses every day until my birthday (in September) to make sure I get the maximum value out of this birthday gift.
Sad part is, that $349 is about 1/3 of the way to Lasik. Todd said that might have to be my one year wedding anniversary present. Now THAT...would be a gift of sight!

A few open letters
Dear The NFL,
I'm pretty sure that if anyone owns the rights to the phrase "Who Dat", it's Websters...and some "pants on the ground" wearing hooligans who speak Ebonics quite nicely. I think you're stupid for telling the Saints, JUST NOW AS THEY ARE HEADING TO THE SUPERBOWL, that they can't use the phrase "Who Dat" in conjunction with a fleur de lis. Seriously? You're lame. My husband was right to turn me on to college football. I will still watch the Superbowl, though. And irregardless of the fact that I am not a Saints fan, I will be drawing fleur de lis' on my face and chanting "WHO DAT?" at nobody in particular, with high hopes that your lame NFL police try to arrest me. But I imagine you'll have a harder time trying to arrest the entire population of New Orleans, who will also be participating in this behavior. And they have every right. Shove it, NFL.
WHO DAT?
Melissa
Dear Jake,
Are you just joking around? Vienna is a weirdo. I'm not saying I'm perfect...because Lord knows I'm far from it. But I have to 100% agree with Ali when she says if you like Vienna, then she (Ali) is so not what you're looking for. I'm on Team Ali. And if you pick Vienna, I will stop watching The Bachelor. Even though I said that after stupid Jason dumped awesome Melissa on national TV to date Molly again, even though he dumped her the first time. And yes, I will probably watch their nationally televised wedding. And yes, if you pick Vienna, I'll probably watch YOUR nationally televised wedding. So in all reality, I probably won't stop watching The Bachelor. But I won't like your decision. And I'll still think there is something weird about the consistently vacant look on her face. So to keep my respect, you should probably cut Vienna loose at the next rose ceremony.
NOT THAT I CARE ABOUT REALITY TV AT ALL,
Melissa

Dear Blackberry Curve,
I don't understand why, even though I place you ever so gently in your cradle charger night after night, you insist on shutting off for no apparent reason at ever so inopportune times. For instance, this evening, driving home from work, while stopped at a stop light, I scrolled through some incoming emails. As the light changed I set you down. When I picked you back up to make a phone call, you were completely off. No persistent pushing of your power button would turn you on. It was only after I removed (and subsequently replaced) your battery, that you perked back up. Full battery. Full signal. Full Fail. What's the deal?
WHO DAT? (Because I'm gonna keep saying it),
Melissa
