Look what I can do, Ma!

"If I can't pull myself out of this crib, I'm sure as hell gonna try to eat my way out of it!"

**Also, can we address the amount of hair he suddenly grew?!

There is no sweeter sound

...than a baby laughing at his daddy... :)

I think I can...

Poor guy...he knows how to get in the correct position, but he just can't quite figure out what to do once he's there...

(Feel free to turn down your speakers...all you can hear is my mom talking to my aunt, and a little bit of Nick's fussing/frustration)

Happy 8 Months and 12 days, Baby Boy!

How Old is Nick: Nick turned 8 months old on October 2nd! But true to form, I forgot to post his update on the 2nd, so I figured, what's 12 more days? WELL, 12 days is a LOT in baby world, let me tell you! Stats: I recently hopped on the scale holding Nick and he weighed 19 lbs. But I'd be willing to bet he's 20 lbs by now. As for height, I have no idea. But boy is growing fast! He's still in size 3 diapers, mostly because we want to use up the plethora of size 3's that we have in his closet. They still fit pretty well, but I think he could wear a size 4 overnight to hold in all that extra pee. He's wearing 9month clothes and jammies, but comfortably fits into a lot of 12 month sized outfits. Mostly pants/overalls in 12 month size, as he seems to be pretty long. There are a few 6-9 month onesies that he can still squeeze into, but only if they were sized pretty big to begin with. Last weekend I packed up all of his 3-6 and 6 month clothes. Little dude had so many clothes, it filled a HUGE storage bin. I might've cried as I sorted through several things that he never wore and realized he would never be able to wear them again. And I also might've made the statement that while I would love to have a daughter, I sort of hope we someday have another little boy because we wouldn't need to buy a single item of clothing for him. Sleep: Holy mackerel. Sleep is now SO much better. Had I posted this on Nick's actually 8 month birthday, this would be a different story. After weeks and weeks of unpredictable sleep patterns, multiple wakings per night, and plenty of sleeplessness for all three of us, Todd and I decided one night "he just needs to cry it out". So that's what he did. For 71 excruciating minutes, Nick screamed and cried. And then he laid his head down, and slept for a solid 9 hours. The next night he cried half the time, laid his head down, and slept a solid 10 hours. This past Monday night, he was down by 7:45pm (a record for us!), and did not make a peep until 7:30am. Almost a FULL 12 hours. Granted throughout the night, every now and then he'll wake up and fuss for a few seconds, but he is now able to put himself back to sleep, which is a huge triumph. Sometimes we still have to let him cry it out when he goes down for the night, but it doesn't last too long, and the crying seems to help him sleep harder and longer. It also helps that he has mastered searching for, picking up, and replacing his own pacifier. I am so proud of our little man.

Milestones: Nick still only has the four bottom teeth, but damn are they cute! It looks like he's going to cut his top teeth very soon -- I swear I can see a little white poking through -- but he absolutely HATES when we try to look at his top gums, so we don't get to check often. He also looks like he is going to crawl any day now. He gets up on all fours and starts rocking back and forth. Every now and then he'll lurch himself forward and flop on his belly and then push back up to all fours and try again. As soon as he gets the arm/leg/brain coordination down, watch out -- he'll be movin! As for words/sounds, he likes to scream and yell and grunt (boy LOVES a good grunting match), but he's also added a repetitive sound that resembles "Dah Dah" to his vocabulary. Of course this pleases Todd immensely -- and I have to admit, it is the cutest sound. Especially when he says it while looking at Todd. :)

Food/Appetite: He's has almost mastered feeding himself puffs. He picks them up with his little fist -- usually between his fore-finger and thumb, but sometimes they get stuck in the palm of his hand -- and instantly brings his fist to his mouth. He is making contact now about 80% of the time. The other 20% of the time, they drop on his lap, get mushed to his palm, or get stuck to his face. Otherwise he is still on pureed baby food that the babysitter and I make. I'm pushing him until his 9 month appointment to ask the doctor how I can start to incorporate more complex foods. I'd love to have him eating whatever we eat for dinner, but I'm so nervous to try anything extreme. Not to mention he loves to blow raspberries while he's eating, and doing so with a mouth full of pureed squash = big yucky mess!

Nick is officially out of his baby tub, and sitting up in the big tub for bath time. He LOVES to be in the bath, splashing his little heart out. He loves chewing on bath toys and really loves having water poured over him. He hasn't quite figured out to close his eyes while water is being poured on his head, but he loves it regardless.

He is also officially sitting up in high chairs and shopping carts! Thank goodness for the shopping cart cover...it keeps him strapped in, and keeps my mind off the worry of germs everywhere.
As for the growing friendship with Whinnie, she is starting to come around even more. She will often drop toys in front of Nick and bark in anticipation of him throwing them for her to chase. Of course he doesn't understand, nor does he know how to throw on demand yet, but they'll get there. Mostly she ends up laying next to him as he plays because we spend 50% of the time yelling at her to stop licking his toys. Poor girl just doesn't understand why there are so many dog toys laying around that she's not allowed to touch!

It's so exciting to watch Nick discover new things every day. Watching his eyes light up as we open an umbrella, or seeing him giggle as we clap for him are the most amazing feelings. Every moment we spend with him is better than the last. Please stay 8 months old for just a little longer, baby boy!

Cry It Out - Night 2

Last night was even more successful than night 1!

Nick and I went to Gramma & Boss' house around 6:30pm to pick up some things mom had snagged for us at Target earlier in the day. Most specifically an all-night white noise machine. We've had the sleep giraffe since Nick was born, and he loves the soothing sounds it makes, but sadly the sleep giraffe turns off after 45 minutes...so we're stuck with either stealthily sneaking into his room without waking him up just to turn it back on (which never works) or risk him waking up to random noises throughout the house.

After our quick visit, we headed back home around 8:00pm, which was a bit late for us, but I have been trying to push back Nick's bedtime just a bit to ensure he's super sleepy. So we got home around 8:30pm, and Nick was already fast asleep in the back seat. He looked like me after a night of beers with the Schwass'. PASSED.OUT.

But I woke him up anyway and gave him his bottle. This sort of reversed my plans and really woke him up instead of put him back to sleep. He sucked down the bottle within about 10 minutes. I held him upright and got a couple of really good burps out of him, and then took him into his room.

I had turned on the white noise machine before his bottle, so it was already going. We sat in the glider and I rocked him for about 2 minutes, and then kissed him, told him I loved him, put him in his crib and said goodnight.

Before I even had one foot out the door, he was SCREAMING. Ear piercing screams. I watched him on the monitor for about 15 minutes, and then went in to give him his pacifier and pat his back. Seeing me coerced some very sad little whimpers from his snot and tear covered face. I stayed no more than a few seconds to pat his back and then left again. And the screams came back -- even harder.

But I stood my ground, watching him on the monitor, and after 15 more minutes of screaming/crying, he laid his head down and went to sleep.

And once again, didn't make a peep for the rest of the night. Even woke up several times to shift position and rub his eyes. In the past, any time he would wake up briefly to rub his eyes, he would instantly start fussing and crying, and we'd run in to rescue him. But with CIO, he doesn't even make a sound and puts himself back to sleep.

He woke up shortly after 7:00am, wide eyed, and super happy. And when I went in to his room, he was thrilled to see me -- giggling, smiling, and loving life.

I am so proud of my little man -- and proud of myself for sticking it out. I was so against all the advice I was receiving to just stick it out for three days, and he'd become a great sleeper. I was against letting him scream and cry like crazy. I was against not comforting him every time he made a little fuss. And now my thinking is reversed.

Nick slept a solid 10 hours last night, without so much as a sound all night. And I got 8 hours (had to watch Grey's Anatomy and Jersey Shore before bed).

The strangest part though, is that my body is so confused by this solid sleep, that I'm still waking up briefly a few times a night. Mostly in a panic because I haven't heard from my little guy. And this morning, I felt a little more tired than usual because I'm not used to getting so much sleep. Maybe I function better off of sporadic sleep patterns - just a few hours here and there? Regardless, CIO is working for us, and we're all feeling good about it.

Should be interesting to see if Nick cries for even less time tonight...or even at all. I will keep you posted!

Cry It Out

Last night we let Nick cry it out. We've attempted CIO before, but any previous time, we've caved after 10-15 minutes of crying and have run in to rescue him.

For the last few weeks, Nick's sleep patterns have been unpredictable and pretty poor. He would fall asleep in my arms at night, as usual, but wake up anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour after going down in his crib. We'd run in, scoop him up, soothe him, lay him back down, and repeat this process all night (sometimes 4, 5, 6 times a night) until ultimately picking up up after the last crying session around 3 or 4am, and bring him into our room to sleep in our bed with us.

I'm not sure if it was the sleeplessness that finally caught up with me, or the fear of having a 2 year old still sleeping in our bed, but I decided we couldn't keep doing what we were doing.

I had read about Moms on Call from several other mommy blogs that I read, and not quite knowing what else to do, I signed up for their online seminar. I watched about 20 minutes of the seminar last night and that was it -- my booty was kicked into gear, and a decision was made. We had to teach Nick to self soothe.

Now I'm not saying this is right for everyone, but it's right for us. And up to this point, I didn't think it WAS right for us. I was certain we'd never do cry it out, because I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

But after watching the beginning of the Moms on Call seminar, I learned a lot about sleep environment, as well as just received affirmation that, in fact, Nick will not cry himself to death. Yes - a million people had told me this on FB...but hearing it out of these professionals mouths -- pediatric nurses with several children of their own -- just made the sick feeling in my stomach shrink a bit more.

Not to mention, several people had told me "Unless you are absolutely ready to commit to CIO, don't attempt it. And your husband needs to be ready as well."

Well, last night, we were finally ready. We just didn't know it yet.

Actually, I'm not quite sure you're ever ready to hear your kid scream hysterically for that length of time...

Of course, we didn't make the decision before putting Nick to bed. He fell asleep in my arms, per the usual, so I laid him in his crib. He slept for about 30-45 mins before waking up and crying. Todd went in almost right away (I guess we weren't ready at that point). Nick seemed pretty upset even with Todd picking him up, so I decided to give him a little Tylenol, as he has been teething on the top pretty fiercely the past couple days.

The Tylenol seemed to quiet him down a bit, but he still didn't want to sleep. Todd held him for about 15 minutes but he wouldn't sleep. Finally I went in and took him from Todd and attempted to rock him to sleep. (At this point we were planning to fore go CIO until the weekend).

After about 15 more minutes, Nick fell asleep in my arms. I stood up to place him in his crib, and he woke up again. So I laid him in the crib anyway, patted his belly and said "goodnight, I love you" and walked out.

He began screaming almost instantly.

And he didn't let up for an hour.

After an hour of extremely hard crying and sobbing, he started taking breaks between sobs to lay his head down (at this point he had flipped to his belly). Todd decided he would sneak in and turn on Nick's sleep Giraffe (it only makes white noise for 45 minutes). I stood at our bedroom door watching the monitor for Nick to lay his head down, and when he did, I signaled to Todd to sneak in his room. Naturally though, as soon as Todd opened Nick's door, he picked up his head and started crying again. But it only lasted about 10 more minutes. And after 10 minutes of crying, breaking to lay his head down, crying some more, etc. he finally laid his head down one last time and dozed off. With the hiccups, of course.

And you know what? Nick didn't make a single peep the rest of the night. Not one little noise. He slept harder than ever. Of course, I'm sure a straight hour of hysterical crying would tucker me out, too. But it was glorious! Being paranoid, I woke up a couple of times, and made Todd check on his breathing when he left for work. But Nick snoozed through it all.

And even better, he woke up smiling and happier than he has in weeks! I mean, he always wakes up pretty happy, but sometimes it takes a while as he's so groggy from a bad night of sleep. But this morning, he woke up well rested and ready to take on the day!

I'm so proud of my sweet baby boy for being so tough, and for sleeping so well. And I'm so proud of Todd and I for not caving...even though we laid on the bed watching the video monitor for nearly a full hour, debating how much longer we should let him cry.

Tonight we're going to purchase an all night white noise machine, as it's highly recommended. I've also removed his mobile, which is often a distraction.

I know he'll probably cry again tonight, but now that we've survived one night of it, I'm confident tonight will be a bit easier. I'm told it takes 3 days to break a baby habit, so hopefully by the weekend, we'll have our great sleeper back!

I appreciate all of the advice and encouragement I've received from other parents going through the same thing. I often wonder how our moms did it before facebook and google. I think I'd go crazy if I didn't have instant reassurement that I was doing the right thing, or knowledge on what to do, at my fingertips.

Last night was by far more gut wrenching and unbearable than anything else we have encountered on our parenting journey in the past 8 months. Sure, the postpartum depression I suffered from for a month was difficult, but I never had to experience my baby seeming to be in pain. Postpartum was an internal struggle with myself that was only affecting me. But watching my baby boy seem so sad and miserable, fearing that we'd never return to love him again...THAT was awful. My heart hurt with every tear. But ultimately, I know we're doing each other a favor. And it only makes us look even more forward to the morning -- when we get to see each others faces once again.

Menu Planning

So in an attempt to hold us accountable for eating dinner at home, I told Todd I was going to do a menu Monday post and start writing up what we planned to cook/eat for dinner that coming week.

Naturally I forgot to post it yesterday. But I did manage to write it all down on my iPhone notepad.

Here is a look at what's cookin' this week in the K household:

Monday: Me - healthy choice fresh steamer meal & salad; T - working late, eating at work

Tuesday: Shrimp Caesar Salads

Wednesday: Crockpot sweet & sour kielbasa over rice (Kielbasa cut into 1 inch pieces, diced mixed red, yellow and orange peppers, diced red onion, minced garlic, one bottle Lawry's Hawaiian style marinade -- all tossed in the crock, set on low for about 7-8 hours...let's hope this works!)

Thursday: $5 foot longs - Subway (I'll either get a salad or save 1/2 of my foot long for Friday's lunch)

Friday: Me - out to dinner; T - working late, eating at work

Saturday & Sunday are always unpredictable, so I won't be including them. And naturally because we love subway, and this month all foot longs are $5, we had to squeeze them in one night. Plus Todd has early softball games on Thursday so a quick dinner means we get to eat together before he heads out.

I'm a dummy though and completely forgot my scheme for this weeks menu and got all excited about the crockpot kielbasa and threw it all in the crockpot this morning. It wasn't until I went to grab some celery out of the crisper to take with me for lunch today that I noticed the Caesar salad kit staring back at me shouting "we're about to wilt! eat us". So tonight's shrimp Caesar salad meal will be pushed back to tomorrow with a great chance of getting scrapped all together for something else involving shrimp seeing as the romaine lettuce will probably be brown come tomorrow evening.

I'm aware of the fact we're only cooking at home twice this week, but with Todd working late twice, and the spell that subway apparently has on us, it just wasn't a good week for cooking. Maybe next week will be better...
