Two years ago today...

...Todd and I went on our "real" first date. In celebration and honor of that day -- one of the most significant days of my life, because it marked the beginning of the rest of our lives together -- I am posting the "How We Met" and "The Proposal" sections of our knot.com page here:

HOW WE MET
We met in 2003 at Red Robin in Fair Lakes, VA. Melissa was a server there and happened to be working the lunch shift that Todd and his best friend Jay came in for. Todd and Jay were having lunch in the bar and Melissa could not keep her eyes off of him. Most of all she loved how good Todd looked in his backwards white Michigan hat (yes, he still has it!). Melissa had the bartender give Todd her number, and then she felt inclined to go say hello. After a quick "hi", Melissa's shift was over and she left for the day. Over the next few days they talked over the phone and AOL instant messenger. After making plans for a date, Melissa ended up standing Todd up. The first date in 2003 never happened. Fast forward 4 years later, January of 2007. Todd happened to be on instant messenger and saw Melissa signed on (he still had her screen name!). He sent her a message, and after some low key chatting/trying to figure out how Melissa knew Todd (she has a bad memory), they set up a coffee date for the following week. On January 29th, Melissa met Todd at the Starbucks down the street from her apartment at 7:00pm. Todd bought Melissa a coffee, and they sat in her car talking. At 11:30pm (4.5 hours later!!) Melissa said she had to get home because she had to walk her dog, and she had to get up early for work the next day. Todd did not kiss her goodnight. Instead, they made plans for another date a few days later on Super Bowl Sunday for lunch. They met at Arby's (romantic!) and after lunch Melissa kissed Todd...and hasn't been able to stop kissing him ever since!

WHEN WE GOT ENGAGED

HOW IT HAPPENED
We had been counting down to our first vacation together for weeks. It finally arrived and we drove up to Ocean City, NJ to spend a week in a beautiful condo with Todd's two best friends (Jay and Chris) and their wives (Larissa and Annie). On the first night of vacation, Todd asked Melissa if she wanted to go for a walk on the beach. It was a little out of character for Todd, but Melissa said "sure". As they walked to the beach Melissa could tell something was going on with Todd because he was very quiet and nervous. When they got to the beach, it was extremely foggy out and they could hardly see anything. They stood there for a few seconds and Melissa said something about the setting being romantic and then said "we can turn around and go back if you want?" but Todd said "I had something better planned", dropped to one knee and said "I couldn't wait until Christmas" (Todd's mom had been telling Melissa he would probably propose at Christmas, when she knew this plan all along!). He then said "will you marry me?" Melissa first said "are you serious?!" and then "YES! YES! Thank you!!" Todd put the ring on Melissa's finger and they practically ran back to the house so Melissa could show off the ring and they could announce what everyone in the house (and pretty much in all of Virginia!) already knew...they're getting married!!!

Thank you to the love of my life for the best two years of my life. I can't wait to see what the future has in store for us, and I know that no matter what it may be, we'll perservere and make the best of it, because we'll be together. I love you, Todd. Here's to the next 50+ years!
